The Mobile Technology Center was donated by the city of Vernon to the Southeast Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the living standards of children and adults in the Southeast area of Los Angeles County. The Mobile Technology Center is designed to provide basic computer literacy training for low income youth and adults in areas including Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Walnut Park/Florence-Firestone, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon.

Universal worked rigorously to construct a 37-foot long Mobile Technology Center. This vehicle is one of the first “green” specialty vehicles built by Universal. Universal used the Freightliner CNG chassis, along with Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) wood products. In addition, the vehicle included Greenguard certified flooring and countertops.

The end result was a brightly colored vehicle equipped with two 12’x 2’ opposing slide-out rooms. Each slide-out room has angled workstation desktops with overhead cabinets above. The vehicle is equipped with a wheelchair lift and one ADA designated workstation. The instructor area is at the rear of the vehicle and includes a large interactive whiteboard with a built in ceiling mounted projector. A trained technician will accompany the vehicle to the Southeast communities. The IT instructor will provide instruction for organizations that want to offer classes but are unable to accommodate a learning center.

Classes that are offered include computer literacy, academic instruction, adult educational training, ESL education, financial literacy, math and reading tutoring and occupational training.

SCDC will partner with HUB Cities, Humans Service Association, Maywood PAL, Gage Middle School, Salvation Army, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, HP-Bell Adult School and East Los Angeles College among other organizations, and will refer students for more advanced classes.

This Mobile Technology Center is paving the way for the Southeast Los Angeles County to become more computer literate. More importantly it will help transform and improve the quality of life for the residents in these cities and Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. is proud to be a part of this effort. classes.
