For thirty seven years, Westside Family Health Center (WFHC) has been providing health care services to the County of Los Angeles. WFHC began their services in an all women’s clinic specializing in the advocacy of the human body and discussing health experiences. Since then, Westside Family Health Center has expanded their services to include: pediatric, adolescent, family and prenatal care. WFHC took a big step earlier this year by providing their patients with the opportunity of receiving mobile health care.

Westside Family Health Center purchased a 36’ Mobile Medical Clinic from Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. The vehicle will be utilized to provide health care services and patient screening. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. is a manufacturing company that specializes in the production of custom-made mobile clinics. The customer’s needs and overall functionality are prioritized when building a vehicle.

Westside Family Health Center’s mobile medical clinic stands out due to the eco-friendly items it contains. The vehicle has Greenguard Certified Meganite Acrylic Solid Surface Anti-Bacterial countertops, FSC (Forestry Stewardship Certified) wood used to construct the cabinets, Greenguard Certified Welch-Allyn Green Series exam Lights, Floor mounted water pedals used to conserve water, and Vinyl Panel Covered Walls (Low to No Volatile Organic Compound content). These green features help reduce the negative toxins that impact our environment and create a cleaner planet. Among these features, the interior of the vehicle is made up of two exam rooms, a patient intake area, a bathroom and galley area. Other vehicle highlights include; a Ricon S-Series Wheelchair Lift, an A&E Weather-Pro electric awning with a key chain remote control, two Welch-Allyn integrated diagnostic wall mounted systems and one electric Power Slide -Out room.

WFHC took receipt of their vehicle last month. They hosted an inauguration event to celebrate the beginning of their mobile medical clinic’s journey in Southern California. The event was held on September 26th, 2011 in the evening hours. President/CEO of Westside Family Health Center, Debra A. Famer, detailed how exciting it was to launch their mobile medical clinic including the services that they will be providing. When asked why WFHC needed a mobile medical clinic in the urban area of Los Angeles, she answered “People don’t understand that freeways act as mountain ranges in Los Angeles, even though we have this massive transit system, taking two or three buses specially when you have kids is really hard” (Picture of Health Newsletter Fall 2011). Westside Family Health Center is hoping to reach as many individuals as possible.
