Books on Wheels!
Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. does it again! The locally owned and operated manufacturing company just finished production of a new 34’ bookmobile for Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Program. Through Federal funding, the County was able to purchase the vehicle to better serve the students in Migrant Education, Even Start and First 5 Programs.
The Migrant Education Program’s basic goal is to help students succeed academic achievement through a means of activities and readiness skills. In doing so, the Program hopes that it can better serve the communities most affected by local budget cuts which eliminated summer school for many students and the use of public libraries. Riverside County’s Migrant Program is currently serving the Coachella, Corona-Norco, Palo Verde, Palm Springs, Desert Sands and Perris School Districts. Over 3,000 students have access to the bookmobile and its’ features.
The bookmobile transports over 2,000 books on a total of 40 light-weight metal adjustable shelves to the more rural areas of the County. Teachers and staff on board have the technology to comprise literacy tests on students to help them gain the skills necessary to develop reading comprehension. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. took special time in developing a floor plan that would be adequate for the items that needed to be installed in the vehicle.
Along with the basic requirements, the bookmobile also embraces a Ricon S-Series Wheelchair lift located next to the main entry door. A hydraulic flat floor power slide-out extends on one side of the bookmobile to add more seating and desk space for lap-tops and printing needs. The greater area of the bookmobile is covered in Lonseal commercial grade which is vinyl floor covering that is Greenguard Certified, to complete the look of a library-type setting.
Planning and construction for the bookmobile took several months to complete; however, the final product was worth the wait. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. did a magnificent job in assembling the vehicle. Migrant children will greatly benefit from all the services provided by the program. Nonetheless, USV, Inc. is proud to have had the opportunity to work with the County on such a meaningful project.
