“Sleeping Giant” depicted on Mobile Clinic!

By: Evelyn CastilloLa Clinica Mobile Delivery

La Clinica del Pueblo de Rio Arriba opened in 1969 as an agricultural based support group named La Cooperativa. The leaders of La Cooperativa raised crops to provide funding for the organization. It was not until 1992, that the Board Members were able to obtain federal funding through the Bureau of Primary Health Care to expand their services. Due to hard work, dedication and numerous donations; the clinic was able to later develop a dental department, a family center and a teen wellness center. La Clinica has been actively pursuing further expansion to assist the public’s medical needs.

Beginning the year 2013, La Clinica del Pueblo took delivery of their newly constructed 40’ Mobile Medical & Dental Clinic. Funding through the United Way of Northern New Mexico allowed for La Clinica to obtain such a significant purchase. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. (USV) manufactured the mobile clinic. For over 19 years, USV has been paving the way and revolutionizing the custom specialty vehicle industry. Centrally located in beautiful Southern California, USV has an impressive location and offers great amenities to its customers.

Their new clinic sits on a Freightliner MC Front Engine chassis. The interior is constructed of top of the line materials such as: Meganite Acrylic Solid Surface Anti-bacterial countertops, Wilsonart Cabinets, Forestry Stewardship Certified wood, LONSEAL Commercial Grade Flooring and Flexsteel Ultra-Leather upholstery.

The clinic is comprised of one rear dental room and one front medical exam room. A patient intake room, ADA accessible restroom and driver compartment complete the entire unit. The rear dental room has a Ricon S-Series wheelchair lift that provides access for handicap patients. A distinct feature of the mobile clinic is the detailed exterior graphic wrap layout. La Clinica del Pueblo incorporated the mountain terrain, often referred to as “the sleeping giant” onto the background photo of their layout. The mountain is seen as a historical emblem of their land.

The staff of La Clinica del Pueblo are excited to utilize their mobile medical & dental clinic. To view photos of this unit, visit our website at: www.usv1.com or “like” our Facebook page at: Facebook.com/USV1

Mission City Community Network 1

Located in the greater area of the San Fernando Valley, the Mission City Community Network, Inc. has established their professional health services to low-income individuals. For over twenty years, the clinic has strived to reach more patients through a group of hub-clinics located in the same area. On top of that, the clinic has since developed a dental and mental health team to expand their care services. Chief Executive Officer, Nik Gupta, along with a professional staff, decided to proceed in the purchase of a mobile medical clinic. In doing so, the clinic would expand their services and accessibility.

Mission City Community Network, Inc. purchased a 38’ Mobile Medical & Dental clinic from Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. Production for the custom vehicle lasted a mere six months to complete and was delivered just in time for the fall school year. The clinic sits on a Freightliner FRED front engine commercial chassis with a steel frame. The vehicle is divided between a rear dental exam room, a center galley are with a patient intake and lab area, an ADA accessible restroom, a front medical exam room and a driver cab area. The dental exam room includes one Ricon S-Series ADA compliant wheelchair lift with cover. The room also contains a full dental system which includes: a wall mounted Gendex DC Intraoral X-ray, Dental EZ Megellan chair with ultra leather upholstery, RAMVAC Bulldog 1 HP Vacuum system with tank, Scan X Duo digital imaging system and lead apron with wall hanger.

The center galley area and patient in-take area have enough space for staff members to complete minor tasks while assisting the public. This area also has bench seating, a wall mounted HDTV, a desk and one medical grade refrigerator and freezer. The ADA accessible restroom provides enough space for a handicap patient to move freely without feeling crowded. The front exam room paves the way with a phlebotomy chair, a medical exam table, a full Welch-Allyn diagnostic system and a Welch-Allyn EKG machine. A unique feature of this particular floor plan is the incorporated slide-out feature which provides ample space and privacy for both the patient and the staff.

The exterior of the vehicle is wrapped with a vinyl graphic that displays the clinic’s contact information and the bottom blue portion which is painted. The exterior compartments provide enough storage space for miscellaneous travel items. The vehicle also includes an A&E Weather-Pro awning with a keychain remote control for easy use. All the minor details and custom items installed in the mobile clinic were specifically designed to meet the customer’s needs. The staff at Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. worked hand in hand with the customer to make sure they exceeded the customer’s expectations. Community Health Center mobile 3

Last year, Congresswoman Lois Capps announced that Community Health Centers of the Central Coast, Inc. would be receiving grant funding to assist with the expansion of the school-based health care services in the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. CHCCC is not new to this process however; they were still thrilled to know the impact this opportunity would give to the students. Community Health Centers agreed to partner up with Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. to build their two upcoming units. CHC has previous experience working with the staff at USV and it was no doubt they would agree to have their professional assistance with such a huge project.

Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. has a reputation for putting their customers first. USV worked hand in hand with George Johnston, the CHCCC Dental Operations Officer, and Sophia Sosa, Chief Operations Officer, to design a functional floor plan that would utilize enough space for the patients and staff members. Both vehicles are custom made to meet the requirements and necessities of the communities they will be servicing.

The pediatric dental clinic was constructed to retain two dental operatory chairs in the rear portion of the vehicle which include their separate dental carts. The other half of the vehicle consists of a receptionist desk with bench seating and a galley area, as well as a restroom.

The medical clinic is similar in that it hosts two exam rooms, fully equipped with Welch-Allyn Diagnostic systems and a lab area. The front exam room contains a wall-mounted HDTV and two handi-flip seats. The galley area has a receptionist desk along with a printer, bench seating and over-head cabinets for storage. Both of the vehicle graphics were designed and installed by SoCal Wraps.

With the addition of these two new clinics, Community Health Centers of the Central Coast, Inc. is able to expand their services to a total of twelve supplementary schools and four additional school districts. Louis Capps stated that “expanding the number and reach of these centers is a clear win for our children”. The USV team did an amazing job in developing these vehicles and hopes to work with CHC again in the future!

ACA Grant Ensures Access to Health Care
By: Evelyn Castillo

Nearly a year ago, Central City Community Health Center was awarded a grant through the Affordable Care Act to obtain a mobile medical clinic.  As the chosen vendor, Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. was given the opportunity to create a mobile vehicle that would meet all the clinic’s requirements.  The Affordable CareAct has issued several grant funds for the public since 2010 and has helped provide affordable health care services to more people nationwide.

Working closely with the staff of Central City, USV was able to develop a floor plan that would provide functional space to perform necessary medical procedures.  The new clinic includes two exam rooms, a patient-intake area, ADA accessible restroom, galley area and a driver compartment. The two exam rooms have exam tables that will provide both comfort and easy accessibility to the patient.  The rear room hosts a wheelchair lift that will allow handicap patients to easily transport in and out of the vehicle in seconds.   The front exam room hosts a medical grade refrigerator that will store medications and other related items with security.  The ADA accessible restroom is located opposite of the galley area.  This part of the vehicle was constructed with sound absorbent walls and comes together with two accordion doors.  The patient intake area has bench seating and desk space for the staff of Central City to utilize while reviewing patient information.

Every single feature of this vehicle was customized to fit the expectations of the customer.  The driver compartment area is where the data/communications center is located.  This area also has two ultra-leather driver and passenger seats that can swivel, rotate and recline.  A complete wrap-around close off curtain completes this room. The exterior of the vehicle has one A&E Weather-Pro electric awning that extends to provide shade during the hot summer days.  The colorful vehicle graphic wrap was designed and installed by SoCal Wraps.

The materials used to build this vehicle are innovative and sustainable to resist rugged environments.  The vehicle is going to be utilized in Orange County, primarily in low-income communities.  Central City Community Health believes that “all patients should be served regardless of ability to pay”.  With this new mobile clinic, Central City’s goal is to service more people within city limits.  Visit USV’s facebook page at: Facebook.com/USV1 for more pictures of this unit.

St. John’s provides mobile health care access
By: Natascha Calnonst johns well child mobile health vehicle-014

Founded in July of 1964, St John’s Well Child and Family Center was founded to respond to the dire need of clinics in southern Los Angeles. St. Johns is a non-profit organization that serves as a primary health source for over 140,000 poor or low-income residents.  St. Johns provides medical, dental, social, and mental health services in the most densely populated neighborhood in southern California.

St John’s mission “to eliminated health disparities and to foster community well-being by providing and promoting the highest quality care in South Los Angeles,” has been a proud center for all of the projects they undertake. The center is proud of this mission to help create a social justice and equal health opportunities for all humans, fighting for the rights and care for those who are underserved and uninsured.

St. John’s is now going to be more able to help those who need it, with the new Mobile Medical unit designed by Universal Specialty Vehicles. This new added mobility will allow them to provide health care access for those who may not be able to reach it. The “St. Johns Health Access Express” mobile health unit will go out into the field and provide outreach, enrollment and education services six days a week in Central and South Los Angeles. The unit will reach uninsured individuals and enroll those who qualify into public health insurance under the “Bridge to Reform” section 1115 waiver and link them to a medical home at one of St. John’s ten health centers. In Los Angeles County, this program is known as Health Way L.A. The “St. John’s Health Access Express” mobile health unit has the advantage of bringing culturally competent services directly to hard to reach individuals who typically are not interacting with the health care system due to transportation, language, cultural and social barriers Two of the six days the “St. John’s Health Access Express” will park at Homeboy Industries – located in downtown Los Angeles- and provide vital medical care , as well as health insurance enrollment and health screening/ education, for their employees and clients. These individuals, including both the employees and clients who are former gang members, typically forego prevention and primary care services due to the danger of crossing neighborhoods and gang boundaries to access healthcare.

Given health care services shortages, transportation restrictions and other social and cultural barriers to health access in Los Angeles County, the need for a mobile clinic to enhance St. John’s services is vital. The “St John’s Health Access Express” has the opportunity to positively impact many under deserved communities through Central and South Los Angeles by bringing critical health services directly to the people who need them the most.

Universal Specialty Vehicles has worked one on one with St. John’s representatives in order to give them a specially designed trailer that fits their exact needs. St. Johns new medical unit is a full 36 feet long from bumper to tongue. Their trailer has been designed in order to encompass three different rooms and even a waiting room. It will have two separate exam rooms each fully equipped. It will also have a Lab area and the entrance waiting area. St. John’s has specialized ADA accessible wheel chair lift, and restroom. This unit has Wilsonart countertops, two Wilsonart desks and special cabinets with positive secure door latches to keep contents in while driving. All overhead cabinets also have lockable storage as well.

Their Follet Medical grade freezer will be available to hold any medical equipment that needs to be stored. Their front exam room will have a standard Enoch exam table with matching stool, stainless steel sinks, flip-up seat and fold down desk.  The center intake area is equipped with a bench seat for waiting, and encompasses.  The last room, the intake or waiting room is located directly in the heart of the unit. This entrance has power stairs and 2 desks for registration or paperwork. It also includes bench seats for patients waiting to be seated made from Veterans Vinyl.

This unit fully equipped and ready to serve its purpose for St. John’s. This added mobility will make St. John’s able to add extra care for those who are unable to seek medical attention because of various reasons. St. John’s is extremely excited for their new portable clinic and can’t wait till they begin using it. We here at USV cant wait to see it in action and know that it will be making a great contribution to the areas it will be serving. For questions or inquiries, please visit us at  www.usv1.com or www.facebook.com/usv1.

Contra Costa County, which is located just east of the San Francisco Bay in California is buzzing full of great news. The Contra Costa County Health Services  Contra Costa County mobilejust received  two new mobile medical units created by Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. this week. These two units will be joining four previous units in their mission to improve health and wellness of children under the age of 21, through a school based program within Contra Costa County.  The 2009 Affordable Care Act, co authored by Congressman George Miller and supported by Representative John Garmendi helped to fund these two brand new mobile units. The staff at Contra Costa County Health Services couldn’t be more excited.

“We are so pleased to receive this funding for these vital resources that help us provide quick, affordable, safe and convenient health services to children who might not otherwise receive the care they need to be healthy and to be able to go to school,” said Public Health Clinic Services
Director Sue Crosby.

Both 40 foot twin units will focus their assistance within the county in school based programs. School-based health centers improve the “health and wellness of all children through health screenings, health promotion and disease prevention activities that enable children with acute or chronic illness to attend school.” These units will be offering free or low-cost services to the public school children in this county. A wide array of skilled medical and nursing services will address needs in the community such as immunizations, tuberculosis screening, and nutrition education. Other services such as family planning, reproductive health services, comprehensive sex education, crisis communication, condom availability, mental health counseling, STD treatment and awareness education are amongst the services that will be offered for the School- Based Program recipients.

Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. made sure to work with the county representatives personally in order to meet their specific requirements for these two units. The interior is fully equipped with everything they might need on the road. Starting with a registration area, with a waiting bench as well as a table and swivel chairs make this area easy to be in and even spacious. The warm caramel interior is inviting for patients and their Ultra-Leather seats couldn’t be more comfortable. The matching cabinets by Wilsonart are not only stylish but practical. All overhead cabinets have lockable storage, and the drawers with Southco positive secure latches. It also has an ADA accessible restroom as well as a nurses counseling room, which is equipped with a sink in the back of the room.

The last room in the vehicle is the exam room equipped with a power exam table by Midmark, including the matching stool. The exam room is also fully equipped with stainless steel sink and faucet, Meganite countertops and lockable overhead cabinets. . This room is also ADA accessible with a Ricon wheelchair lift.  Each vehicle is even equipped with a slide out pharmacy for medications and Follet Medical grade refrigerator and freezer that hold needed vaccines or utensils.

Both have all of these great components inside, but they also look fantastic from the outside. The units are wrapped with vinyl lettering and have full color UV laminated graphics. They picture the rolling hills of Contra Costa County and are truly a sight to see. The green to teal fade in the front of the unit makes a bold statement. Their logo is featured towards the back on the side. These bright colors and new shiny exterior bring a great finish to not one, but two brand new units. These beautiful bright colored graphics were designed by SoCal Wraps, and if they weren’t created as identical units, you’d swear each was one of a kind.

The staff using these two units is extremely excited to receive them finally and put them to great use. Contra Costa now has a total of six units to aid the people of their county. These two vehicles both ingeniously designed and fully operational, will be bringing services and help that will greatly support our future generations in Contra Costa County, and we here at USV are proud to have been a part of that aid. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. continues to deliver overall customer satisfaction.  For questions or inquiries, please visit us at www.usv1.com or www.facebook.com/USVInc.

The vehicle has two slide-out rooms that extend to create more interior work space.  The first slide out is approximately 8’x30” and is located in the center intake area.  It hosts a small desk, task chair and overhead cabinets.  The second slide-out room is approximately 8’x30” and contains extra space for a bench seat, desk and overhead cabinets.  This slide-out room is located in the rear exam room. Another great feature that the vehicle has is that their bathroom is ADA accessible.  Also, the vehicle contains a medical grade refrigerator and medical grade freezer that will be utilized for vaccines.

In order to create privacy, USV installed a Woodfold Commercial Accordian door that separates the intake area from the lab and bathroom area.  Privacy is a main concern for incoming patients and this feature will allow them to feel secure. A built-in 32” HDTV Flat Screen is on board the vehicle and is viewable from the exterior.  An A&E Weather-pro Electric Awning is located on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the vehicle has the same equipment that you would find in a regular hospital.  San Joaquin Community Hospital is currently using their Mobile Medical Clinic to provide Immunization Clinics for children whose parents cannot afford healthcare services. San Joaquin Community Hospital has been providing mobile immunization clinics since early 1990.  At the time, they reached over 50,000 children that had immunization needs.  The mobile clinic keeps expanding and more children are being reached.  With the greater need of school immunizations coming up, San Joaquin’s mobile medical clinic is busy working this summer.  The hospital stations their vehicle in local mall parking lots and other various locations throughout their work week.

Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. worked with a great staff to make this project a reality.  From the smallest of details, to the bigger ones, USV was able to complete the vehicle in a timely manner.  USV is known for their continued customer service and success in building vehicles that can be utilized for many years to come.

Central City_Community_Health_Center_Blog

Central City Community Health Center was established in 1994 as a non-profit medical facility to help aid the under served communities of Southern California. Since then, the center has expanded to four facilities that provide continued medical services to over 12,000 patients annually.

On August 31st, 2011, a Grantee Award Ceremony was hosted by the Central City Community Health Center in Anaheim, California to recognize the individuals whose hard work and dedication has led to the receipt of a new federal grant for the health center. The federal grant will be utilized for the construction of a new Mobile Medical Clinic that will be manufactured by Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc.

Among the attendees was Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, who shared a few words regarding her view in creating more affordable health care opportunities for the people in Orange County. Rep. Sanchez agreed that funding is being provided for the community however, it is useless if we cannot get the healthcare to be obtainable by residents. She argued that while some people are able to receive affordable health care, they cannot get to a medical facility because the nearest one might be located across town. Her goal is to increase the number of medical facilities and what better way to do it then to have a Mobile Medical Clinic.

Isabel Becerra, CEO of the Coalition of Orange County Community Health Centers was thrilled to have been a part of this experience. She addressed that the world has a misconception of Orange County and that while many of its’ amenities include high-famed reality shows and Disneyland; other more important issues exist among city lines. She was glad to see that a federal grant was awarded to Central City Community Health Center to help aid the communities in need.

Later, Becerra awarded Rep. Sanchez with a plaque from the National Association of Community Health Centers for her dedication and efforts in helping to create more health care opportunities for the underserved communities. Dr. Varela, CEO of Central City Community Health Center was also recognized as the recipient of the federal grant. Gayle McClean, Director of Nurses for the Santa Ana Unified School District was recognized for her support and encouragement among the school district.

Mary Hall, President/CEO of Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc was also in attendance along with Administrative Assistant, Evelyn Castillo. It was an honor for them to be a part of such an important event that will help hundreds of children and adults in the area. A production meeting is scheduled later this week with the staff of Central City Community Health Center to start the process. USV is excited to get this project started!

riverside_mental_health_blogMental health disorders among individuals are so severe they can interfere with their daily life. The Riverside County Mental Health Department has helped diagnose and treat severe cases of illnesses among children and adults. Recently, the Department decided to purchase three mobile medical clinics from Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. All three vehicles are identical in terms of interior and exterior features. The Department’s goal in purchasing the mobile clinics is to expand their services in the Riverside County and help families in need.

The Department hopes to assess and treat about fifty families and children per vehicle for a total of 150 within a year span. Also, the staff primarily anticipates to be working with children between the ages of 0 to 8. The clinicians operating in these vehicles are highly qualified to treat children with behavioral issues. Nonetheless, the staff refrains from diagnosing children due to the changes that can occur in their adolescent years. Chris Home, Supervisor for the Mental Health Services Department, states that “in most situations, clinicians prefer to perform Conduct Spectrum Disorder which is not a diagnosis but rather a description of cluster behavioral issues”. Chris goes on to explain that children diagnosis is based on behavioral trait patterns seen by teachers, parents and caregivers. A few of the more common disorders that the Department detects are; Adjustment Disorder, Attentions Deficit Disorder (with or without Hyperactivity), Separation Disorders, Oppositional Disorders, Reactive Attachment and Conduct Disorder.

Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. (USV, Inc.) is a manufacturing company operating in the construction of custom-made mobile clinics.

USV, Inc. began building exceptional vehicles in 1994. The staff at USV, Inc. is highly qualified to perform all tasks associated with the construction of each vehicle. Due to the fact that all the vehicles are custom made, USV, Inc. prides in striving to meet their customer’s requirements every step of the way.

Building three identical vehicles required detailed work and organization. All three vehicles were designed with three separate interior rooms; the conference room, observation room and a play room. The separation of each room is fundamental and allows the staff on board to better prepare and observe the behaviors of their patients. All three rooms in each vehicle have slide-out rooms that extend outward to create more interior space. The conference room has bench seating, a 52” HDTV and galley area complete with a microwave, coffee pot and sinks. The observation room has a built-in one way mirror and literature racks. Also, it contains audio/visual equipment used to record the treatment session. The recording is later viewed by the clinician and the parent. The play room has cabinetry storage, a ceiling mounted camera, and motion sensor light, a table with chairs along with a bookcase for the children to utilize while playing.

The exterior of the vehicles have an A&E Weather-Pro electric awning, two HEHR entry doors equipped with Kwikee double electric steps and full-wrap graphics done by SoCal Wraps. A distinct feature of each vehicle is they are equipped with two hydraulic powered entry/exit door step well covers.

For thirty seven years, Westside Family Health Center (WFHC) has been providing health care services to the County of Los Angeles. WFHC began their services in an all women’s clinic specializing in the advocacy of the human body and discussing health experiences. Since then, Westside Family Health Center has expanded their services to include: pediatric, adolescent, family and prenatal care. WFHC took a big step earlier this year by providing their patients with the opportunity of receiving mobile health care.

Westside Family Health Center purchased a 36’ Mobile Medical Clinic from Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. The vehicle will be utilized to provide health care services and patient screening. Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. is a manufacturing company that specializes in the production of custom-made mobile clinics. The customer’s needs and overall functionality are prioritized when building a vehicle.
USV, Inc. has served communities nationwide and is dedicated to meet every agency’s requirements.

Westside Family Health Center’s mobile medical clinic stands out due to the eco-friendly items it contains. The vehicle has Greenguard Certified Meganite Acrylic Solid Surface Anti-Bacterial countertops, FSC (Forestry Stewardship Certified) wood used to construct the cabinets, Greenguard Certified Welch-Allyn Green Series exam Lights, Floor mounted water pedals used to conserve water, and Vinyl Panel Covered Walls (Low to No Volatile Organic Compound content). These green features help reduce the negative toxins that impact our environment and create a cleaner planet. Among these features, the interior of the vehicle is made up of two exam rooms, a patient intake area, a bathroom and galley area. Other vehicle highlights include; a Ricon S-Series Wheelchair Lift, an A&E Weather-Pro electric awning with a key chain remote control, two Welch-Allyn integrated diagnostic wall mounted systems and one electric Power Slide -Out room.

WFHC took receipt of their vehicle last month. They hosted an inauguration event to celebrate the beginning of their mobile medical clinic’s journey in Southern California. The event was held on September 26th, 2011 in the evening hours. President/CEO of Westside Family Health Center, Debra A. Famer, detailed how exciting it was to launch their mobile medical clinic including the services that they will be providing. When asked why WFHC needed a mobile medical clinic in the urban area of Los Angeles, she answered “People don’t understand that freeways act as mountain ranges in Los Angeles, even though we have this massive transit system, taking two or three buses specially when you have kids is really hard” (Picture of Health Newsletter Fall 2011). Westside Family Health Center is hoping to reach as many individuals as possible.

Nonetheless, Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. created a video on the functionality of this mobile medical clinic. To view the video, please visit: http://www.usv1.com/. Give USV your input!

Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. is not only producing eco-friendly vehicles, but the manufacturing company is now going green too! USV worked closely with Polarlite, Inc. to help reduce the energy intake of their 20,000 sq. foot building.

USV’s manufacturing plant is located in the rural area of Perris, California. The production staff was in need of a more luminescent work setting which is why the company turned to Polarlite,Inc. for help. After receiving their energy audit, it was clear USV needed a new lighting solution.

Green Manufacturing of Mobile Vehicles

In doing so, the experts of Polarlite, Inc. mounted twenty three new fluorescent high bay light fixtures in the factory. The light fixtures are going to help USV in providing more energy efficient solutions, by spending less on energy and building operations, by producing less waste, by providing a clearer natural environment and by allowing others to work under a more comfortable and productive physical environment.

Polarlite, Inc. is a Proud Authorized Agent of Express Solutions of Southern California Edison (SCE). The company has been working towards helping businesses maintain more energy efficiency through a variety of eco-friendly lighting fixtures.

Their most popular light, the Fluorescent high bay light fixture offers more advantages instead of other commonly known metal lights. The high bay lighting has an instant strike on and re-strike starting times and have a higher color rendering ability. Customers have the option of choosing from several different color options and the life of these lights last longer. It is said that each light is estimated to save the consumer an average of $55-$94 per year.

These new light fixtures are just another way of how Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. cares about preserving the natural environment and being energy conscious.

Alameda County mobile vehicle

Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless (ACHCHP) is a federally funded program that provides comprehensive primary medical and health care services to homeless people. ACHCHP provides services to thirty four sites in Alameda County, including a physical clinic in Oakland and a couple mobile medical clinics.

Since 1988, ACHCHP has done outstanding work in providing dental, medical and mental health care to homeless people. In addition, the program provides shelters, food, social and legal services and substance abuse treatments. Mobile Medical Clinics play a fundamental role in providing services for the homeless. In June 2011, Alameda County took delivery of a new 38’ Mobile Medical Clinic that was custom built for the program by Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. The vehicle will be operated by a group of professionals, including; nurse practitioners, medical assistants and support staff.

The new vehicle is equipped with several eco-friendly items, including Meganite Acrylic solid surface anti-bacterial countertops and Wilsonart Cabinets that are both Greenguard Certified. The mobile clinic contains floor mounted foot controls for water to each of the sinks on board. The pedals allow for water conservation and are more environment friendly. Overall, the vehicle is separated into three areas: the counseling, the lab/intake and Exam room. All these areas are essential for the staff on board to perform their duties.

The counseling area is used to perform private interviews. This area has an area wide enough to accommodate two confidential interviews at once. The Lab/Intake area is equipped with a centrifuge and tube holder, a water dispenser, phlebotomy chair including a table and curtain, and an all in one Printer/Fax/Copier. The Exam room where patients are treated includes a Power Procedure Exam Table (that can be used for Medical and Dental Exams) with foot pedals, a swivel exam table light, lockable cabinets, scale and adjustable chair. There are roughly 36 literature racks throughout the vehicle that display pamphlets with important reading information. One built-in 22” flat panel HDTV is displayed in the Center Intake room. A distinct touch throughout the vehicle is that there are clothes hooks in each room. Also, the vehicle contains a Ricon Wheelchair lift that is positioned at the curb side and an A&E Weather Pro Electric Awning with keychain remote control.

Nonetheless, Universal Specialty Vehicles, Inc. performed an outstanding job! USV took extra time in building the vehicle to make sure that all the medical equipment was situated where it could best be utilized. Alameda County Health Care for the Homeless Program was thrilled to finally have their vehicle and excited to put it to use.
